১৬ বছর আগে এই দিনে মুহুর্মুহু গ্রেনেডের বিকট বিস্ফোরণে কেঁপে ওঠে ঢাকার বঙ্গবন্ধু অ্যাভিনিউ। মানুষের আর্তনাদ আর কাতর ছোটাছুটিতে তৈরি হয় এক বিভীষিকা। গোটা দেশ স্তব্ধ হয়ে পড়ে ওই হামলায়। আজ সেই ২১ আগস্ট, নৃশংস হত্যাযজ্ঞের ভয়াল দিন।

২০০৪ সালের এই দিনে আওয়ামী লীগের কেন্দ্রীয় কার্যালয়ের সামনে তৎকালীন বিরোধীদলীয় নেতা শেখ হাসিনার সমাবেশে অতর্কিতে গ্রেনেড হামলা চালানো হয়। মারা যান আওয়ামী লীগের মহিলাবিষয়ক সম্পাদক আইভি রহমানসহ ২৪ জন। আহত হন শেখ হাসিনাসহ পাঁচ শতাধিক নেতা-কর্মী। সাংবাদিকেরাও আহত হন।

দিবসটি সামনে রেখে গতকাল বৃহস্পতিবার এক সংবাদ বিজ্ঞপ্তিতে আওয়ামী লীগ বলেছে, ২১ আগস্টের গ্রেনেড হামলা ছিল ১৯৭৫-এর ১৫ আগস্টের কালরাতের বর্বরোচিত হত্যাকাণ্ডের ধারাবাহিকতা। আওয়ামী লীগকে নেতৃত্বশূন্য করতে সংগঠনের সভাপতি শেখ হাসিনাসহ দলের প্রথম সারির নেতাদের হত্যার উদ্দেশ্যেই ওই ঘৃণ্য হামলা চালায় ঘাতক চক্র। শুধু গ্রেনেড হামলাই নয়, সেদিন শেখ হাসিনার গাড়ি লক্ষ্য করেও চালানো হয় ছয় রাউন্ড গুলি। অল্পের জন্য প্রাণে বেঁচে গেলেও তিনি আহত হন, তাঁর শ্রবণশক্তি চিরদিনের মতো ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত হয়।

২০০৪ সালের পর থেকে আওয়ামী লীগ গ্রেনেড হামলা দিবস হিসেবে দিনটি পালন করে আসছে। মহামারি করোনাভাইরাস সংক্রমণ রোধে এবার গ্রেনেড হামলার দিনটি স্মরণে সীমিত পরিসরে বিভিন্ন কর্মসূচি পালিত হচ্ছে। রাষ্ট্রপতি মো. আবদুল হামিদ ও প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা দিবসটি উপলক্ষে বাণী দিয়েছেন। ২১ আগস্টের সব শহীদের আত্মার মাগফিরাত কামনা এবং আহতদের প্রতি গভীর সমবেদনা জানানো হয় বাণীতে।

প্রধানমন্ত্রী বলেন, তৎকালীন বিএনপি-জামায়াত জোট সরকার হামলাকারীদের বিদেশে পালিয়ে যাওয়ার সুযোগ করে দেয়। গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সব আলামত ধ্বংস করে। কিন্তু সত্য কখনো চাপা থাকেনি। পরবর্তীকালে সুষ্ঠু ও নিরপেক্ষ তদন্তে বেরিয়ে আসে বিএনপি-জামায়াত জোটের অনেক কুশীলব এ হামলার সঙ্গে সরাসরি জড়িত ছিল। ২০১৮ সালের অক্টোবরে ২১ আগস্ট গ্রেনেড হামলার রায় হয়। এর মধ্য দিয়ে আইনের শাসন প্রতিষ্ঠা পেয়েছে, জাতি কলঙ্কমুক্ত হয়েছে। আইনি বিধিবিধান ও প্রক্রিয়া অনুসরণ করে যত দ্রুত সম্ভব এই রায় কার্যকর করা হবে বলে আশা প্রকাশ করে তিনি।

বাণীতে রাষ্ট্রপতি বলেন, ‘এ হামলায় বেঁচে থাকা অনেকে আজও পঙ্গুত্ববরণ করে দুর্বিষহ জীবন যাপন করছেন। ঘাতক চক্রের লক্ষ্য ছিল বাংলাদেশ আওয়ামী লীগকে নেতৃত্বহীন করে গণতান্ত্রিক প্রক্রিয়াকে রুখে দেওয়া এবং দেশে স্বৈরশাসন ও জঙ্গিবাদ প্রতিষ্ঠা করা। কিন্তু বাংলাদেশের জনগণ তা হতে দেয়নি।’
